Talvez a menina tivesse uma doença cardíaca, mas acho que não morreu, porque as pessoas ficam a olhar para o céu. Não, não era uma doença, ela era diferente. Normalmente as pessoas não gostam do que é diferente. E ela não era feliz com que as pessoas pensavam. Ela não gostava de estar ali e ainda não tinha descoberto qual era o  lugar onde gostava de estar, ainda não tinha descoberto que pertencia aos pássaros. Quando fica feliz ganha asas.

Maybe the girl had a heart condition, but I don’t think she died, because people stare up at the sky. No, it wasn’t a disease, she was different. Usually people don’t like what’s different. And she wasn’t happy with what people thought. She didn’t like being there and she hadn’t figured out where she liked to be yet, she still hadn’t found out that she belonged to the birds. When she’s happy, she grows wings.

He looks like he wants to get a better look at what’s on the other side, and so he approaches and does the camera too and we see a couple together. I think because of the music he’s sad that something isn’t happening like he wanted it to happen. He’s looking at his old life, he’s reviewing a memory, and he feels alone.

Eles estão quase às escuras, só entra a luz do candeeiro lá de fora e eles falam baixinho porque é de noite e por causa do bebé. Há um certo desespero porque a mãe não volta. E quando ele queima o papel eu acho que isto tem a ver com a mãe e que significa que ele perdeu a esperança que ela volte.

Eu senti-me sozinho ao ver este excerto, porque eu à noite quando não sei se tenho a presença de um adulto sinto-me desprotegido.

(About Rafa’s excerpt)

It was late – there’s almost no clarity. Their house is in a building, in a small neighborhood – we see other buildings from the window, and when someone walks by he looks down. They are almost in the dark, only the lamp light comes from outside and they speak quietly because it is night and because of the baby. There’s near a despair because the mother won’t come back. And when he burns the paper I think it has to do with the mother and that means he’s lost hope that she’ll come back.

I felt alone watching this excerpt, because at night when I don’t know if I have the presence of an adult I feel unprotected.

From the excerpt of How Green was my Valley : A lady hits the floor with a stick and the kid hits the ceiling with his stick so they know they’re there. They’re both lying in bed and they can’t get out. First the window is closed and we see the snow, it’s winter, and then the window is open and two birds enter the room, it’s spring. It means they’ve been lying there for months.

Excerto L’Aventura: Uma senhora está deitada e ouve-se um som que eu associei ao frio, à neve, mas quando ela abre a janela percebe-se que estamos junto ao mar, e então parece que o som diminui e ficamos a ver a imagem. Dá uma sensação de calma. Acho que é o nascer do sol, porque eles estão a dormir, mas também podia ser o pôr do sol – se a imagem fosse a cores percebia-se melhor. A mim deu-me a sensação de solidão, porque parece que estão ali sozinhos no meio do nada.

From the excerpt of L’Aventura : A lady is lying down and we hear a sound that I   associated with the cold, the snow, but when she opens the window you can see that we are by the sea, and then it seems that the sound diminishes and we keep seeing the image. It gives you a sense of calm. I think it’s the sunrise, because they’re sleeping, but it could also be the sunset – if the image was in color, you’d understand it better. It gave me the feeling of loneliness, because it feels like they’re out there all alone in the middle of nowhere.

Excerto The Ghost and Mrs.Muir:  A janela já não é central, nos outros excertos a janela é o que é focado na imagem. Aqui a janela é importante porque é por ela que entra o som da tempestade e o fantasma. E também porque entra a luz da lua e lá dentro está escuro e ela não consegue acender a vela. Se fosse dia, um dia de sol, era uma cena muito diferente: via-se logo o fantasma. A não ser que ele fosse mesmo um fantasma e aí desaparecia.

Excerpt of The Ghost and Mrs.Muir: The window is no longer central, in the other excerpts the window is what is focused on the image. Here the window is important because it is through it that enters the sound of the storm and the ghost. And also because the moonlight comes in and it’s dark in there and she can’t light the candle. If it were day, a sunny day, it was a very different scene: you could see the ghost right away. Unless he was really a ghost and then he would disappear.

No primeiro excerto o que se passa dentro de casa não muda, mas lá fora muda. Para eles que não podem sair todos os dias são iguais. Eu tive um bocado esta sensação com a quarentena, perdi a noção do tempo. No outro saí para apanhar sol pela primeira vez, porque estava branca como um fantasma, e reparei que havia muito mais flores à volta do meu prédio. (Rita) Eu também perdi a noção do tempo, só sei que dia é porque olho para o canto do computador. (Lebi) Eu não, eu planifico tudo para o mês, por isso sei sempre em que dia estou. Não mudou a minha relação com o tempo e como vivo num bairro fora da cidade, não senti muita diferença na vida lá fora, as pessoas continuaram mais ou menos a fazer as mesmas coisas. (Sofia) Eu quando passo muito tempo em casa, parece que o tempo passa mais depressa, mas também tenho sempre andado muito bicicleta (Guilherme).

In the first excerpt what goes on inside the house does not change, but outside changes. For them, who cannot go out, every day are the same. No excerto da Janela Indiscreta (Hitchcock); há um homem que se magoou na perna e por isso está preso em casa (provavelmente não pode sair porque há muitas escadas) e como não tem nada para fazer põe-se a olhar pela janela e acaba por descobrir coisas que se calhar não devia. A câmara ora mostra o que ele vê, ora mostra ele a olhar. A câmara filma a perspectiva do seu olhar e os planos vão ficando mais próximos porque ele passa a olhar pelos binóculos e depois por uma lente, para ver cada vez melhor.

The camera sometimes shows what he sees, sometimes shows he looking. The camera captures the perspective of his eyes and the plans get closer because he looks through the binoculars and then through a camera lens, to see better and better.

No excerto de Lá Bas (Akerman), tive a sensação de que podemos estar sempre a ser observados sem saber. Como na Janela Indiscreta. Aqui também é alguém que observa e não quer ser observado, mas neste excerto a janela não está aberta, está fechada e tem os estores. Parece que foi alguém que ia a passar pela janela e ficou a olhar lá para fora. Num a personagem está dentro de casa a olhar para alguém que também está dentro de casa, no outro é alguém que está dentro de casa a olhar para as pessoas que estão nas varandas.

No excerto de Cidade Branca (Tanner), vemos uma janela em que o vento entra e faz o cortinado ir para a frente, para trás, para os lados. Só vemos o cortinado e o quarto, não vemos a rua e isso dá muita curiosidade: o que é que se vê da janela? Sabemos que a janela está aberta, porque entra o vento, a luz e o barulho e achamos que deve ser uma cidade.Este excerto dá a sensação de solidão, mas os barulhos que se ouvem dão-nos a sensação que não estamos isolados, mesmo que estejamos sozinhos.

In the excerpt from Cidade Branca (Tanner), we see a window in which the wind enters and makes the curtain go forward, backwards, to the sides. Exercício 3

Tínhamos escolhido a música do Quebra-Nozes porque era só instrumental e porque foi a única em que imaginámos coisas que podíamos filmar. A sensação que a música nos deu foi a de encontro com o desconhecido, curiosidade e medo. Decidimos então filmar um menino que estava a jogar à bola e depois a bola ia parar a um sítio onde ele nunca tinha ido. Ele ia à procura da bola, mas depois descobria o lugar e já não se interessava pela bola. Filmámos muitas vezes os planos da bola sozinha, porque era difícil acertar na direcção. Os planos do Guilherme a olhar foram feitos pela Sofia, ela a olhar em volta através da câmara e a descobrir o lugar, por isso foi o momento em que na montagem decidimos pôr a música a começar.

We had chosen The Nutcracker Suite because it was only instrumental and it was the only one where we figured things we could film. The feeling that the music gave us was that of meeting the unknown, curiosity and fear. We decided to film a boy who was playing with a ball and then the ball would end up in a place where he had never been before. He’d go looking for the ball, but then he’d find the place and he wouldn’t be interested in the ball anymore. We had to repeat several times the shot of the ball rolling on its own because it was hard to hit the steering. The shots of Guilherme looking were made by Sofia, she looks around through the camera and discover the place, so it was the moment in the editing that we decided to start the music.

Para filmar o sentido do tacto vendámos a Rita, que ia tirando de um gorro, vários objectos: “Eu demorava muito tempo com cada coisa porque estava mesmo a sentir e a ver se percebia o que era através do tacto.”

To film the sense of touch, we blindfolded Rita, who was taking several objects out of a hat: « I took a long time with each thing because I was really feeling and seeing if I could perceive what it was through touch. »

Para filmar o sentido do paladar vendámos o Diogo e a Rita ia-lhe dando coisas à boca: umas salgadas, umas ácidas, umas doces: “ Algumas coisas eu nunca tinha comido e sabiam-me mal, outras eu gosto muito como chocolate.”

To film the sense of taste we blindfolded Diogo, and Rita was giving him things in his mouth: some salty, some sour, some sweet: « Some things I had never eaten and they tasted bad, others I really like such as chocolate. »

Filmámos só um take de cada plano porque queríamos filmar as reações espontâneas.

We shot only one take of each because we wanted to film the spontaneous reactions.

 

O sentido da visão filmámos numa manhã, fomos para um lugar descampado ao pé da escola. Cada um filmava dois planos e depois mostrava o último à próxima pessoa que ia filmar. Na montagem guardámos a ordem dos planos, só cortamos o tempo.

The sense of vision we filmed one morning, we went to an open place near the school. Each one filmed two shots and then showed the last to the next person who was going to shoot. In the film editing we kept the order of the plans, we just cut the time.

Apresentação do grupo Escola Básica André Resende – Évora

Somos o grupo da oficina de cinema da Escola André de Resende de Évora. O Guilherme, o Lebi, a Carolina, a Sofia e o Guilherme fizeram a oficina o ano passado. A Rita, o Diogo, a Ana Teresa, a Ana Rita e a Soraia entraram este ano. Gostamos mais de umas disciplinas do que outras, temos quase todos animais de estimação, uma cor favorita, uma comida preferida, e gostamos todos de ver filmes.

Nous sommes le groupe de l’atelier de cinema de L´École André de Resende de Évora. Guilherme, Lebi, Carolina, Sofia et Guilherme ont fait l’atelier l’année passé. Rita, Diogo, Ana Teresa, Ana Rita et Soraia, ont commencé cette année. Á l’ École nous aimons certaines disciplines plus que d’autres, nous avons presque tous des animaux d’ estimation, une couleur preferé, un plat preferé et nous aimons tous voir des films.
